The Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education, a non-profit R&D institute affiliated with the School of Leadership & Education Sciences at the University of San Diego, is a leader in inclusive innovation and education. Since 2017, we have advanced innovation, leadership, and equity in education through pioneering research and evaluation, innovative curricula and technologies, and professional learning grounded in the learning sciences. Our team of researchers, designers, technologists, and faculty collaborates with trans-disciplinary partners, including districts, schools, educational organizations, and education-supporting companies, to sustain and scale various educational initiatives.

ABOUT PACTFUL®: Created by the Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education at the University of San Diego, Pactful® (pactful.org) is a free, virtual, inclusive social good innovation tool and curriculum for teachers and teenagers worldwide. Designed to leverage students’ own unique strengths, interests, and values, Pactful provides access to innovation culture, and empower learners, in partnership with educators and communities to make the world a better place. Pactful inspires students to use an innovator’s mindset to create solutions to address local and global challenges aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Pactful’s current initiatives include the yearly Jacobs Teen Innovation Challenge with over 4,000 students, a new Spanish version of the Pactful app and curriculum,, and the ImPactful Teen Innovation Sandbox and Bootcamp experiences for teenagers, where students work in teams to identify a local issue, interview civic leaders, and use design thinking to prototype their solution and create a professional podcast to share with a larger audience.

Detailed Description:

This is a full-time temporary, benefit-based position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2025. The appointment is renewable at the discretion of the University and dependent upon performance and continued funding.

This is an exciting opportunity to expand our current Pactful programs and spearhead new initiatives. The Pactful Project Manager at the Jacobs Institute for Innovation in Education at the University of San Diego oversees strategic planning, growth, and the meaningful implementation of academic leadership and operational support for Pactful's professional and student learning programs. We are seeking agile candidates with an innovator and entrepreneurial mindset, a learner-centered focus, and an emphasis on team and partnership development, along with a background in building and scaling inclusive and innovative educational programs. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership of Pactful’s Core Services and Programs

  • Manage, implement and oversee the Pactful Team on the design, implementation and evaluation of high quality Pactful initiatives, including the annual Jacobs Teen Innovation Challenge, ImPactful Teen Innovation Sandbox and Bootcamp experiences, Social Innovation teacher engagement opportunities, and other emerging Pactful initiatives. 
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Assistant Director of Finance and Administration on annual goals and objectives, projections, staffing, and budgeting for Pactful initiatives. 
  • Actively pursue grant and contract funding opportunities from foundations and organizations to support the development of Pactful initiatives. 
  • Initially focus on the current priorities, including:
    • Develop and implement a strategy for Pactful's newly developed Spanish program and its expansion to Mexico and other Latin American regions.
    • Establish a framework to scale the ImPactful Teen Innovation Sandbox and Bootcamp programs to other schools and school districts.

Team Leadership, Training, and Mentoring

  • Coordinate hiring and recruitment of Pactful Team members.
  • Oversee performance development cycles, conduct goal-setting, coaching, and annual reviews. 
  • Encourage a culture of innovation and provide ongoing mentoring, feedback, recognition and professional development opportunities to build the collective capacity of the organization. 
  • Plan and facilitate regular, collaborative team meetings.

Strategic Partnerships and Development

  • Establish a national footprint for the Pactful team through attendance at conferences and industry events. 
  • Engage SOLES and other USD faculty, staff, and students in Pactful initiatives.
  • Stay current with professional readings and research in relevant fields.
  • Maintain and cultivate relationships within University of San Diego and with other key educational partners, such as the San Diego County Office of Education, San Diego Unified School District, community organizations, industry experts, and relevant local leaders, as well as international representatives.
  • Identify relevant grants, prepare comprehensive grant applications, and manage the grant lifecycle, from submission to reporting. 
  • Explore creative funding strategies such as public-private partnerships, impact investing, and philanthropy to diversify the institute's revenue streams and support new program development. 
  • Cultivate partnerships with philanthropic foundations and organizations that share the institute's mission, seeking financial support and collaboration opportunities to launch new educational initiatives.

Jacobs Institute Leadership and Engagement

  • Provide regular updates to the Jacobs Institute team.
  • Serve on Jacobs Institute, SOLES, and/or University committees as assigned. 
  • Represent the Institute professionally in all activities. 
  • Collaborate with other team members to advance the work of the Jacobs Institute. 
  • Contribute to, facilitate and/or participate in community engagement activities as part of the Jacobs Institute team.

Research and Advancement

  • Regularly evaluate, develop and enhance Pactful programs, models, resources, materials, and frameworks through inclusive best practices in feedback and research. 
  • Collaborate with the Research and Evaluation team to evaluate the impact of Pactful initiatives and engage in research to advance knowledge. 
  • Identify and integrate relevant emerging technologies into Pactful and related programs.

Communications and Dissemination

  • Oversee effective communication, including storytelling, of Pactful initiatives. 
  • Collaborate with USD, SOLES, and Institute communications staff to increase visibility of Pactful projects. 
  • Support recruitment of educators and student participants for Pactful initiatives. 
  • Support the creation of newsletters to keep educators and other members of the Pactful community informed. 
  • Create and participate in webinars and podcasts as part of the programming and engagement.
  • Oversee social media updates and ensure the website is current with the latest Pactful activities.
  • Research and disseminate insights from Pactful with the wider educational community through published articles, conference participation, reports, white papers, and speaking sessions, contributing to the advancement of educational innovation and technology.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Belief that today’s teenagers, when provided access to innovation culture, tools, and entrepreneurial experiences, can literally change the world.
  • Master’s or PhD degree in education, social innovation, educational technology, learning sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience in K-12 education, curriculum development, and implementation of innovative programming. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and write professional publications, training materials, grants, and reports.
  • Experience with public speaking, presenting, and engaging diverse audiences of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams, including educators, designers, developers, and administrators.
  • Adaptability to evolving technologies and trends in the EdTech landscape. 
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and project management skills. 
  • Must be responsive, team-oriented, reliable, and detail-oriented. 
  • Experience resolving complex problems in a dynamic, collaborative work environment. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of leadership experience developing and scaling educational programs in higher education.
  • Experience implementing educational programs with current and emerging technologies such as virtual reality, AI, etc.
  • Knowledge of current learner-centered models, online and blended programs, and transformative technology practices in K-higher ed environments.
  • Knowledge of K-12 education policies and practices. 
  • In-depth knowledge of national and international professional learning market conditions and ability to determine strategic education sectors. 
  • Successful grant-writing experience. 
  • Entrepreneurial experience.
  • Spanish fluency. 
Posting Salary:

$6,000-7,000 per month; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
