This recruitment is open to current University of San Diego employees only. Only current USD employees are eligible to apply and be considered for this position.
The Audiovisual Technician serves an integral role on a team that ensures the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice (KIPJ), Shiley Theatre, Knauss Center for Business Education (KCBE) and Learning Commons (LC) facilities are welcoming and engaging for our diverse campus community and guests. The AV Technician oversees the maintenance and operation of all audiovisual equipment used in the conference and meeting space in the facilities noted above, including lighting, sound, video and related equipment such as Creston Control equipped presentation spaces and video teleconferencing systems (VTC). Meet with clients to discuss their audiovisual needs prior to events to ensure event requirements can be met and executed properly, including equipment set-up, proper staffing, and troubleshooting for client during events. Accurately log hours, services and equipment used for post-event invoicing. Ensure equipment is maintained in good working order, conduct regular inventory, make recommendations and help execute the upgrades and/or purchase of technology to ensure the facilities meet the current event technology standards. Train student and casual workers, faculty and staff on how to set-up, operate and troubleshoot audiovisual equipment. This person must be flexible and willing to work a demanding schedule that often requires early morning, late evening and weekend hours, changes on a weekly basis and may require overtime.
In conjunction with Instructional Media Services (IMS), expedite major and minor repairs to all types of audiovisual equipment housed within facilities, including ordering of replacement parts for equipment repairs. Prepare and maintain documentation of conference space presentation systems. Provide assistance to faculty in use of classroom technology. Work collaboratively with Instructional Media Services and assist or provide backup support for occasional campus projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Event Audiovisual Operations and Coordination:
- Work closely with Operations staff to ensure event audiovisual requirements are met.
- As needed, consult with Operations staff and/or clients, and participate in event planning meetings to become fully aware of audiovisual requirements and coordinate resources appropriately.
- Ensure the timely delivery, set-up and operation of audiovisual equipment including rentals.
- Provide pre- and post-production support including videotaping events, character generation and titling, storage of media on USD network server for future broadcasting and webcasting.
- Ensures audiovisual equipment is returned and stored properly.
- Develop and maintain training materials, user help documents and update procedures for the use of AV equipment.
Inventory, Maintenance, and Installation:
- Maintain AV equipment and database, including detailed records to track equipment life expectancy and plan for replacement cycles. Delivers, installs, recovers and stores AV equipment. Troubleshoot problems with AV equipment and as necessary works with Network Specialists and Telecommunications Specialists to resolve problems.
- Make minor repairs to all types of audiovisual equipment, including video recorders, video cameras, television monitors, audio recorders, and sound systems having digital electronic circuitry and integrated circuit chips.
- Assist with future planning and implement installations and/or facility layouts.
- Execute appropriate installation and connections of equipment in conference rooms.
- Prepare and maintain documentation on presentation systems.
- Maintain the parts and supplies inventory to support the operation of the facilities audio and visual needs, including ordering replacement parts for minor equipment repairs.
- Evaluate the best means to reduce the prospect of failure of media equipment systems.
- Troubleshoot problems with AV equipment. As necessary, works with ITS/Media Services to resolve problems.
- Maintain records of repair, placement, and maintenance of equipment.
- Serves as a resource for identifying and solving technology-related equipment problems.
Miscellaneous Support and Services:
- Assist faculty and staff with a variety of technology needs that may include computer, printer, telephone support and coordinate installation, repairs, etc. with on-campus providers.
- Assist with miscellaneous projects and tasks.
- Train casual and student staff in the set-up and operation of audiovisual equipment to support events in the facilities

Job Requirements: |
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School diploma required
- Minimum two (2) years of related work experience required, which can be a combination experience working with and operating audio/video presentation equipment, repair and installation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prefer experience in adult education setting, audiovisual production or rental firm, or other meeting and conference venues including hotels
- Prefer knowledge of and ability to use EMS or equivalent reservation software
- Prefer Electronics degree from a Tech School or AA Degree or two years of college-level course work with a concentration in one of the following: computer science, computer applications, audio visual media, or related field.
Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent public communication skills and the ability to interact courteously, effectively and professionally with event clients, faculty, staff, students and others in the working environment with a service-oriented attitude.
- Must be a self-starter with the ability to organize, categorize and prioritize workload effectively and efficiently, under minimal supervision and changing demands.
- The ability to interpret and carry out USD policy as it relates to the activities of individuals or groups occupying the facilities.
- Ability to reason logically, draw valid conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of video and audio production, video recording and broadcasting equipment and video and audio editing software. Experience with VTC equipment usage.
- Requires well-developed oral communication skills as well as technical skills to present and exchange technical information. Must be able to train others and make presentations comfortably. Must be detail-oriented and able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and interruptions simultaneously.
- Demonstrated knowledge of computer operating systems (PC and MAC) and MS Office applications.
- Experience in the use and connectivity of computer peripherals and multimedia equipment in both a wired and wireless networked environment.
- Software installation and troubleshooting techniques.
- Operating sound, lighting and electronics as they apply to audiovisual maintenance, repair and event operations.
- Reading and interpreting schematics and service manuals. Review, understand and apply concepts presented in equipment operation manuals, training programs, conferences and/or professional literature.
- Ability to use a variety of power and hand tools, cleaners and test equipment related to the maintenance and repair of technology-related equipment.
- Audiovisual technical experience- including support and training for:
- Smart classroom control systems, Creston preferred
- Video and audio switching equipment, patching and routing
- Document cameras
- LCD projectors
- Displays and monitors
