Detailed Description:

Assists the Department of Art + Architecture + Art History (AA+AH) Facilities and Safety Manager in the maintenance, management and technical advising of DAA+AH studios, shops, labs, and equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work in coordination with Facilities and Safety Manager, Department Chair, Program Directors, faculty and staff to implement how facilities can best serve the department activities.
  • Routinely inspect and maintain equipment in studios, shops, and labs and work with users to ensure spaces are clean, organized, and left in safe working condition.
  • Regularly assess operational effectiveness of computers and installed software, lab equipment. Report issues to the Facilities and Safety Manager, to determine how to fix, repair or replace resources as needed. 
  • Maintain expertise of assigned equipment in the labs and studio spaces.
  • Ensure compliance with equipment checkout systems.
  • Assist the Facilities and Safety Manager to maintain inventory for lab and studios.
  • Assist the Facilities and Safety Manager in the training of faculty for use of assigned equipment and ensure compliance with all safety protocols.
  • Communicate and coordinate with ITS department to troubleshoot computer issues in the labs/classroom and ensure compliance with USD policies and protocols.
  • For department specific printers, ensure maintenance and operation of both large and small format printers; coordinate training sessions for faculty and manage the schedule to accommodate student and faculty printing.
  • Maintain regularly scheduled “shop” or “lab” hours in which students can access assigned studios and shops outside of class times.
  • Work with the DAA+AH Facilities and Safety Manager to facilitate the proper disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Coordinate with faculty and students on the production of large volume prints and plots during mid-reviews and final reviews.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA in art or architecture, BArch or BFA in Art or related area
  • Minimum one year experience required as an Art or Architecture student with studio work or extensive exposure to technical lab/studio work.

Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, set and meet deadlines, problem solve and make basic decisions.
  • Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of tools, equipment, computers, hardware and software, services and resources, and machinery in each of the different facilities, especially in relation to digital and analog video, photography, digital fabrication
  • Knowledge of 2D and 3D design software
  • Familiarity with post-production standards and technologies
  • Familiarity with health and safety practices and precautions applicable to art and architecture studios
  • Background in traditional and contemporary art and architecture design making processes
  • Understanding of contemporary art and architecture practices and theory desirable.
Posting Salary:

$22.31 - $26.72 per hour; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
