Detailed Description:

This is a full-time temporary, benefit-based position with an anticipated end date of December 31, 2026. The appointment is renewable at the discretion of the University and dependent upon performance and continued funding.

The Assistant Director of Operations (AD) will report to the Director and will be responsible for overseeing SDRCC’s operations, budget and provide leadership support for fundraising efforts that advance San Diego’s leadership in climate resilience solutions. The AD will support and lead grant writing and project proposal development, project development, manage member and SDRCC fundraising efforts; in addition they will help the Director to oversee SDRCC’s budget and manage invoicing and support for payments. As available, the AD will provide technical and research support needed to fulfill capacity building projects and program effort, specifically in partnership with SDRCC’s member agencies. They will support SDRCC’s community and membership engagement and support the Director by leading member communication, grant writing, and additional engagement opportunities and lead SDRCC Annual Climate Leader Award Program and manage sponsorships.

The University of San Diego serves as Fiscal Sponsor for the SDRCC which is currently housed in the Office of the Provost.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and Support SDRCC Program Development, Fundraising, and Capacity 
  • Manage and support the Director in SDRCC Fundraising Efforts: including but not limited to leading grant writing to support Climate Collaborative programming, research projects, and sponsorships
  • Support Building and Maintaining Relationships: participate in community dialogues, support environment team members and help identify opportunities for collaboration and regional resilience project development
  • Lead SDRCC Membership and Network Building: work with the Director and Advisory Board to advance outreach and communication materials that will support membership recruitment and retention efforts, as well as ensure member benefits are executed
  • Assist the Director to develop annual program impact reports for active projects, contracts, grants and ongoing programs as needed
  • Oversee and lead annual efforts for the Annual Climate Leader Award Program, including managing program timeline, managing sponsorships, relationships, and partnerships to ensure successful program execution.
 
Manage SDRCC Operations and Administration 
 
  • Oversee and support the Director construct and manage SDRCC’s annual forecast, updating throughout the fiscal year to reflect new realities around projects, fundraising, personnel and financial changes.
  • Oversee tracking, invoicing and coding of all revenues, including gift agreements, grant, contract and service agreement payments.
  • Coordinate communication with the Office of Sponsored Programs and Grants Accounting on grant budgets and expenses.
  • Assist the Director with the Climate Collaborative Network and Membership: assisting current members in sustaining engagement, aiding member recruitment, coordinating on member benefits, navigating membership changes, and supporting new members
  • Support SDRCC Communications: Including contributing content and program updates for the newsletter, website, and other SDRCC communication and outreach materials, including social media and membership engagement, provide support for project website content and process updates as needed.
  • As Needed Project Support for Core Programs: Support core SDRCC programing such as Working Groups, Network Meetings, and Member Mixers by supporting event planning and execution, arranging speakers, creating agendas, notetaking and compiling needed materials.
 
Support SDRCC Program Administration 
 
  • Assist the Director and staff, the Climate Collaborative Network and Supporting Membership: assisting current members in sustaining engagement and navigating changes as well as supporting new members. 
  • Assist the Director and staff of the Climate Collaborative and the Advisory Board: supporting Board meetings, including through scheduling, creation of agendas, and facilitating meetings. 
  • Assist the Director and staff in Fundraising Efforts: including but not limited to grant writing to support long-term Climate Collaborative programming efforts. 
  • Assist the Director and staff to develop content for the newsletter, website, and other Climate Collaborative communication and outreach materials.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes. 

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a sustainability related field including: environmental science, urban planning, public policy, public administration, business or financial management
  • 3-5 years of experience working in climate, sustainability, public policy, resilience planning
  • Strong project management skills
  • Experience with grant writing, fundraising, and/or philanthropic development
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • Sensitivity and demonstrated competence in working with diverse populations
  • Experience working with local cities, public agencies, nonprofits, philanthropy and community groups in the San Diego region

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate Degree in related field strongly preferred, graduate degree may substitute for 1-year of experience
  • Background in quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills, data synthesis and creating summary findings; experience operations and project management software
  • Experience analyzing data from publicly available government data sources
  • Experience researching public policy and conducting academic literature reviews

Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Analyze and make thoughtful suggestions on the design and implementation of Climate Collaborative program priorities and projects.
  • Coordinate work with local and regional agencies, nonprofits and academic institutions.
  • Communicate clearly, both in the written and spoken word, and to write, edit, proofread, research, and report.
  • Exercise judgment and leadership skills to make decisions under uncertainty.
  • Demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and discretion in dealing with sensitive complex issues.
  • Principles and practices of climate change, adaptation, climate resilience, energy management and general sustainability.
  • Pertinent local, State, and Federal regulations and laws related to climate change.
  • Principles and practices of effective writing, photos, video, and communication.
  • Internet technologies and associated products, tools, and equipment.
Posting Salary:

$6500 - $6666.67 per month; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
