Detailed Description:

Duties and Responsibilities:

 Personnel 

  • Develop and provide leadership in implementing personnel plans including organizational structure for areas of responsibility.
  • Recruit, hire, evaluate and administer salaries for staff.
  • Implement training and in-service programs for relevant staff.
  • Provide leadership and direction in the hiring, training, discipline, termination, and career development for staff.

Strategic Planning

  • Establish and implement short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, policies, experiential programs, and operating procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate operational effectiveness, and effect changes required for improvement.
  • Establish strategic directives in ways that are consistent with the University’s commitment to a strongly experiential and innovative organization, a sound financial position and a nurturing intellectual community.
  • Develop and lead efficiently in the supervision of administrative, graduate, and undergraduate student staff, manage budget, and establish a wide variety of high quality comprehensive recreational sports, fitness, outdoor adventure, and holistic wellness programs that provide opportunities for community members to connect with each other, as well as develop and sustain healthy behaviors.
  • Champion program development, creativity and ensure comprehensive assessment to determine whether programmatic outcomes are achieved.  

Leadership 

  • Oversee student recreational facilities and programs, including supervision of staff, fiscal management, ensuring necessary upgrade or renovations, maintenance, and capital improvement projects are completed, and planning for continued growth, as needed.
  • Oversee and promote awareness of the relevant policies and information for the campus community by overseeing a marketing plan, departmental publications, web pages, and a strong social media presence.
  • Represent recreational wellness programming to key stakeholders. Serve as key touchpoint for feedback and take the lead on resolving concerns or urgent issues.
  • Develop and lead implementation of strategic plan, identifying strategic priorities, annual goals and implementation timelines.
  • Develop and lead implementation of co-sponsored or complementary programs and form strong network ties with campus groups and organizations, departments, and relevant campus committees.
  • Engage in professional development including attending professional conferences and keeping current with respect to relevant trends, research and data.
  • Develop recreational courses and trainings as directed by the Assistant Vice President for Wellness.

Fiscal 

  • Collaborate with senior leadership on  the preparation of long-range financial forecasts and annual budgets, recommending to senior leadership the appropriate levels and types of plans to ensure the fiscal stability of those units within the ED’s purview.
  • Determine capital and personnel requests in conjunction with annual budgeting process.
  • Manage relevant equipment amortization plan.

Administration

  • Direct the provision of all services necessary to maintain relevant facilities and ensure operational readiness during all periods of usage.  
  • Work with University Risk Management Office, University Facilities, Auxiliaries and Department of Public Safety to develop and/or implement health and safety policies and protocols, risk management, and enforcement of safety and health policies, regulations and protocols.
  • Ensure that the recreational facilities and equipment are clean, safe, and well maintained. Oversee facility work requests, and usage policies; generate reports and monitor equipment policy and usage.
  • Oversee the preparation of all necessary documentation for weekly, monthly and for quarterly and annual reports. This includes participant and usage data, facilities updates. goal completion, and assessment reports, 
  • Ensure emergency preparedness for all relevant staff.
  • Ensure all required certifications are current for self and staff members.
  • Represent the organization on appropriate University and Student Affairs committees.
  • Communicate with University constituencies, parents and alumni.
  • Contribute to a robust campus environment by completing special projects and performing other duties assigned by the Assistant Vice President of Wellness.
  • Participates in the Campus Recreation leadership team on-call structure in an as needed capacity, including nights and weekends.

Examples of Work:

  • Work collaboratively with the AVP of Wellness, the Wellness Leadership team, Student Affairs colleagues, and other key campus stakeholders to enhance the recreational and well-being experiences of students and other guests. Lead efforts to cultivate and maintain accessible, inclusive, and vibrant well-being spaces, programs and activities.
  • Leads USD Wellness Recreation urgent response and other on-call team processes.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree required
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff.
  • At least 7 to 8 years of progressive leadership and administrative experience required in a related field such as recreation, outdoor education, wellness, health promotion, and/or higher education facilities management. A Master’s degree may substitute for one year of work experience, at the rate of two years of education is equivalent to one year of work experience. 
  • Strong experience with budget development, management, and fiscal reporting.
  • Experience supervising professional staff and hourly staff required.
  • Demonstrated success in the innovation, development, implementation, and assessment of successful programs related to aquatics, recreational sports (intramural and club), fitness, wellness, and outdoor programming.
  • Creative and entrepreneurial self-starter.
  • Experienced fiscal manager.
  • Familiarity with relevant technology and relevant software applications.
  • Familiarity with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, parents, alum, visitors, and community members.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or terminal degree in Higher Education Administration, Public Health, Business Administration, Psychology, Non-profit Leadership, or a related field
  • Strong experience in implementing and successfully managing a fitness/wellness membership program strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing a large recreation facility, both indoor and outdoor and hosting successful events preferred.  
  • Experience developing and managing all sports camps preferred.

Special Conditions of Employment:

This position is expected to work flexible hours and be available during prime usage, special events and programming, including weekends and evenings.

Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with Automated External Defibrillation (AED) and First Aid Certification are required. Certification required within 90 days of employment start date.
  • National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) Certified Pool/pa Operator (CPO) certification and Climbing Wall Instructor certifications are preferred.
  • Registered Collegiate Recreational Sports Professional (RCRSP), Certified Recreational Sports Specialist (CRSS) or Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) designations are preferred.

Tools and Equipment Used:

  • Working knowledge of personal computers, various software applications (Google Office Suite, Scheduling software, membership software, POS Card Office Software), general office equipment.

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
