Department Description:

The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering (SMSE) has recently ranked among the top 14 schools for non-PhD granting institutions by U.S. News and World Report. USD provides a high-quality undergraduate education by emphasizing small classes and a high level of faculty-student interaction. The school currently houses undergraduate engineering programs in computer science, electrical engineering, industrial & systems engineering, integrated engineering, and mechanical engineering. The school also offers professional MS degrees in Applied Artificial Intelligence; Applied Data Science; Cyber Security Engineering; Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship; Engineering, Sustainability and Health, and Engineering Management.

SMSE is committed to making meaningful and lasting progress in responding to the needs and concerns of underrepresented groups, including scholars of color, women, veterans, persons with disabilities, and other persons with marginalized identities. Our commitment to diversity and social justice in engineering is reflected in the Engineering Exchange for Social Justice, as well as senior capstone design projects that partner with local and global community groups and focus on social and environmental justice. These project teams work with mentors from non-profit organizations or community groups to collaboratively develop engineering solutions that will have a positive impact. In addition, the student organizations for Society of Women Engineers, Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers, and National Society of Black Engineers are very active organizations within the School of Engineering, with dedicated support from faculty, staff, and external donors.
