Detailed Description:

The Web Developer is part of the central ITS web team and works to implement web technologies such as websites, applications, and related
and integrated web services.

The Web Developer will perform roles in planning, development, and managing integrated web-based technology and offer solutions for integrated web services in the university’s technology environment. The position will work closely with the Senior Web Administrator to provide a supporting role when needed. The position helps create and manage applications using React that can be used by any ITS-managed website or web system.

Project management skills and the ability to complete projects involving numerous stakeholders are necessary. The Web Developer needs experience with programming and web database languages in order to plan and implement features involving multiple technologies and platforms, including those using open-source products. On larger initiatives (such as website redesigns) the Web Developer will also be called on to work with peers and consultants to define website technology needs and implement to completion.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Website Oversight and Technical Development 

  • Responsible for helping to oversee the academic websites at USD and integrating technology services and systems that will enhance the experience for site visitors over time.
  • Develops web pages and applications (React-driven) for the university’s website as directed
  • Creates template components from provided designs and implements on university website
  • Works with ITS to identify the need for centralized dynamic database-driven web technologies whenever appropriate.
  • Ensures that the visual presentation and content of websites reflects and enhances the overall branding, visual identity practices, and marketing plan of the university.
  • Tests websites thoroughly. Ensures sites function properly across a variety of browsers and devices, and performs site validation checks.

Technology Integration 

  • Works collaboratively with technical peers to recommend new features on the USD website including web technologies as well as cross-platform technologies.
  • Creates and follows through on project scoping to outline milestones and deliverables to peers and customers.
  • Tests and evaluates web-based technologies; assesses the feasibility of these technologies and software, and makes recommendations.
  • Works with vendors and customers to acquire files and necessary website assets and integrates them into the site.
  • Serves a role in improving and enhancing the business processes of areas across campus; this can include creating online systems and technologies that make it possible for site visitors to interact with the website to submit or provide information.

Website Planning 

  • Works with vendors and customers to acquire files and necessary website assets and integrates them into the site.
  • Meets with clients (faculty, staff, and students) to make recommendations on advanced, interactive, and engaging features on the main USD website.
  • Responsible for technology advising to continually improve university websites; this includes advising of web leadership/peers as well as customers.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited higher-education institution preferably in Computer Science, Computer or Business Information Systems, or a related field.
  • At least two (2) years of experience in web development.
  • At least two (2) years of experience with React technology.
  • At least two (2) years of MySQL/PHP experience.
  • Experience working within a responsive design framework; Foundation preferred.
  • Experience in translating wireframes and design mockups and turning them into HTML/CSS.
  • Experience with search engine optimization (SEO) methods and standards.
  • Understand the importance of staying current in the technology field and rapidly learning new and changing software and tools.
  • Experience with 508/ADA compliance.
  • Experience training non-technical peers and developing documentation for website maintenance and usage

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of or experience working in a higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of servers and system administration, maintenance, and architecture.
  • Working experience on the command line (*nix –rhel 6). o Experience with AP style.
  • Knowledge / experience with other programming languages such as JSP, perl, Python
  • Experience utilizing Jenkins for Continuous Integration
  • Familiarity with Versioning software such as GIT.
  • Knowledge of *nix shell scripting

Performance Expectations: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience or good working knowledge of the following:
  • Technologies: HTML, CSS, XML, React, Javascript, MySQL (database), PHP (programming)
  • Web Tools: CMS tools (WordPress and Cascade Server preferred), responsive frameworks (CSS Grid), Github
  • Experience with search engine optimization (SEO) methods and standards
  • Knowledgeable about web-related emerging technology and development
