The work at this grade involves installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems, and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. Works from building plans, design drawings, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, slope, fall, and proper operation of systems and equipment. Must then install or replace such systems/equipment. Must have extensive knowledge of the operation of various systems and equipment, and of how they are placed, slanted, and sloped. Work is often done with little or no advice. The supervisor checks work only to see that it meets accepted trade standards
Duties & Responsibilities:
Perform skilled journey level plumbing work related to the trade in the following categories of work:
- Operates and maintains plumbing systems including, but not limited to, heating, hot and cold domestic water systems, sanitary sewer, storm drain and LP pressure vessels, natural gas, pneumatic and hydraulic systems. Operate and maintain system regulators, measuring, monitoring and controls devices. Operates pumps, pumping stations, motors and controllers.
- Utilize diagnostic techniques and tools to troubleshoot and repair systems, components, fixtures, and equipment in response to operational problems. Installs building fixtures and equipment as a replacement or addition.
- Submits reports, orally, or in writing, of progress and status as necessary to ensure proper job accounting and to identify and resolve any problems encountered that may cause delays, shutdown, or damage.
- Utilizes our work management system (TMA) on a daily/regular basis, logging all work and use of materials/parts for tracking.
- Continually expands knowledge of the trade through appropriate courses, seminars, publications, and contacts with others in the trade.
- Maintains tools and equipment in serviceable condition.
- Works in a neat and orderly manner. Cleans-up daily and at the end of the job.
- Reads and interprets design documents, technical publications, O&M and other reference materials to determine appropriate job requirements and procedures.
- Maintains a thorough working knowledge of relevant codes and regulations and applies them consistently in daily activities.
- When asked, checks plans, specifications, layouts, materials and installations for completion to code and USD standards.
- Participates in design reviews for construction projects, including submittal reviews.
- Mentor and train plumbers, mechanics and on-call staff.
Practices safety techniques:
- Consistently follows safety practices appropriate to the trade and complies with rules and regulations established by the University, and governmental agencies (local, state and federal).
- Maintains awareness of the typical hazards of the work place as well as the special hazards that may be encountered at any University facility location such as biohazards, low-grade radiation and chemicals known to the State of California to cause, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
- Follows established governmental (local, state, and federal) procedures for dealing with special hazards and promptly reports any on the job accident in accordance with departmental practice.
Maintains varying work schedule:
- Must be available to be called in for emergency work after hours or on weekends and holidays.
- Must work individually or in teams coordinating assigned work with other groups and departments.
- May be assigned to work at any USD facility/location.
- Assist craft workers from other trades or shops when assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- HS Diploma or GED and completion of a recognized plumber or pipe fitter apprenticeship, or a minimum of four years of work experience as a master-level plumber and vocational training commensurate with a formal apprenticeship program.
- Possession of a valid California Driver license is required.
- Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications.
- General knowledge of customer service techniques; demonstrated successful customer service experience. Eight or more years of working experience in a commercial, residential, institutional or educational facilities operations and maintenance setting.
Performance Expectations - Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge in the profession of journey-level plumbing trade;
- Advanced skilled in system operation, maintenance, repair and preventative maintenance procedures;
- Demonstrated ability to perform master-level plumbing with a minimum of supervision;
- Demonstrated ability to read and understand technical documents, manufacturer data, design documents and O&M literature, shop drawings, and diagrams;
- Fluid controls experience: familiar with the operations and controls for flow, pressure and temperature, switches, controls sensing devices, systems operations logic and variable speed equipment operations;
- Ability to apply intellectual knowledge to systems operations for the purpose of problem solving, apply knowledge of plumbing system fluid characteristics;
- Demonstrated ability to effectively and timely diagnose equipment, system and component failures on domestic water, waste and storm water systems, compressed air, oil and natural gas systems;
- Apply advanced knowledge and sound judgment to resolve complex plumbing problems, prepare and justify recommendations for resolution;
- Skilled in construction, installation, and fabrication techniques typical in the trade;
- Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain hand power tools typically used in the trade, in a safe and productive manner;
- Demonstrated ability to silver solder, and soft solder;
- Ability to perform mathematics typically used on the plumbing trade; working knowledge of applicable codes and regulations;
- Understanding of chemical and fluid characteristics typical of the plumbing trade;
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Physical ability to perform indicated tasks;
- Demonstrate ability to work well in teams or alone; general knowledge of customer service techniques; demonstrated successful customer service experience;
- Ability to work effectively in an environment subject to frequently changing priorities;
- Ability to access input and retrieves information from a computer system for word processing, records retrieval and maintenance, research and communication purposes.
- Ability to plan, specify, order materials and estimate work.
Special Conditions of Employment:
- Must be able to work assigned hours and may be assigned to work any shift. Employees working in this classification may be designated as essential personnel and subject to occasional overtime, call backs and may be required to serve 24/7 on-call rotation.
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license and may be required to drive University vehicles.
- Must wear a uniform prescribed and furnished by USD.
- May be assigned to work in the vicinity of laboratories where biohazards, radioactive or other potentially hazardous substances are stored or used.
- May be assigned to work at any USD facility/location.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- The position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, lift and carry up to 50lbs., push and pull over 50lbs., crawl, climb stairs and ladders, scaffolding, bend and stoop, kneel and squat, reach, hand and finger dexterity for the use of tools, feel material samples, see for all duties, hear instructions, drive a vehicle, as well as wear a respirator where necessary.
- The position may be exposed to hazardous equipment and machinery, walking on uneven ground, dust, gas or fumes, noise, extremes in temperature or humidity and work at heights.
Tools & Equipment Used:
- Operate and maintain electric, pneumatic and hydraulic power tools and equipment.
- Operate pipe coupling repair tools and presses, electric powered snake, hand snake, brazing and welding equipment, gutting grinding and finishing tools used for bending and shaping pipe and fittings.
- Inspection and diagnostic tools including bore scope, video, ultrasound, flow, temperature and pressure sensors, utility and gas locating tools.
