Coordinates the disability management, counseling and support services provided to students registered with the Disability and Learning Difference Resource Center (DLDRC).
Maintains a caseload of students with disabilities in need of individualized support services with particular emphasis on students identifying with mental health or psychiatric concerns.
Collects, verifies, maintains and appropriately communicates information contained in the documentation provided by students regarding their disabilities.
Assists with review of documentation to determine appropriate academic accommodations. Assists students in the development of compensatory strategies for learning in the curriculum and co-curriculum.
Coordinates the implementation of accommodations and addresses questions and concerns raised by students, faculty, staff and parents.
Provides appropriate consultation regarding disability and wellness issues to university stakeholders including parents, faculty, and administrators.
Provides training and outreach to university constituents on issues relevant to students with disabilities and other mental and behavioral health concerns.
Responsible for the coordination of temporary disability accommodations, notetaking services, or other mental and behavioral support services, as needed.
Assists in monitoring of overall campus accessibility, both programmatic and physical.
Other duties as assigned by the Director of Disability and Learning Difference Resource Center.
The role of the Coordinator of clinical support services in working with students and the responsibilities of the position are significantly tethered in the university's contemporary Roman Catholic mission.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Coordinates the provision of support, guidance and advising to students registered with the department of Disability and Learning Difference Resource Center.
- Provides direct services to students with disabilities including: intake appointments, academic advising (supplemental to academic advisement via faculty) and disability management counseling, study skills development and disability case management.
- Provides verification of disability status to former students and USD alumni.
- Determines academic accommodations for psychiatric disabilities & is directly responsible for a caseload of students regarding all aspects of accommodations for these students.
- Maintain electronic records of student and faculty contacts.
- Reviews medical, psychoeducational and psychiatric documentation to determine appropriate academic accommodations.
- Provide consultation, support and training for practicum/interns, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders.
- Conduct workshops, in-services, training sessions and facilitated discussions on disability issues.
- Provide consultation to faculty, staff and parents concerning individual student needs.
- Manages the provision of specific accommodations subsets.
- Review requests for specific accommodations(i.e. temporary disabilities, notetaking, mental and behavioral health needs).
- Develop and implement appropriate accommodations.
- Coordinate communication with other university departments or off-campus providers.
- Manage various functions of the DLDRC including: temporary disabilities, test taking for students w/ psychiatric disabilities, managing test-taking environment, manage provision of priority registration accommodation program.
- Provide administrative support to the department, as needed.
- Assists in monitoring the overall campus accessibility, both programmatic and physical.
- Assist with acute interventions and decision making in consultation with Director and serve as the Director’s designee when needed.
- Assist with mental and behavioral health needs, as license / certifications allows.
- Serve on Wellness Area, Student Affairs Division and/or University committees as assigned.
- Master’s degree in Education, Special Education, Psychology, Counseling or related field with an emphasis in cognitive and/or learning disabilities.
- Two years of experience working with students in the field of disability management
- Terminal degree preferred.
- Licensed mental health provider in state of California
- Clinical and administrative supervision experience preferred
Performance Expectations - Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Expertise in working with and providing support to students with documented disabilities especially psychiatric disabilities and/or ADHD.
- Knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 as they pertain to a post-secondary environment.
- Experience working with students in a college/university setting.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively with faculty, administrators, students and their families.
- Develop and maintain relationships across multiple campus departments (Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, University Operations, etc.) to support access and accommodations.
- Familiarity with Catholic higher education and willingness to support the Catholic mission and vision of the University.
Tools & Equipment Used: Computer, software, telephone, fax, and other related office equipment and technology used by students with disabilities.
