Detailed Description:

This recruitment is open to current University of San Diego employees only. Only current USD employees are eligible to apply and be considered for this position.

To assist the Head Coach with the coordination, guidance, direction and supervision of the women’s rowing program. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: coaching student-athletes, fleet and boathouse maintenance, monitoring student-athletes’ academic progress, program development and fundraising, recruiting, operations, budget, and team travel.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist Head Coach with Teaching and Coaching 

  • Assist with the organization, planning and implementation of daily practices.
  • Direct on-water coaching responsibilities. (as assigned by the head coach)
  • Assist with the development and improvement of rowing technique. Work with individual rowers on ergs when requested and appropriate.
  • Teach out of season, individual skill sessions on ergs, staying within the NCAA regulations for individual player workouts.
  • Evaluate practice tapes and provide feedback to head coach, or to athletes when requested by head coach.

Recruiting 

  • Assist in the identification and recruiting of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes for admission to the University with adherence to admissions and athletic department policies and procedures.
  • Pass the NCAA Coaches’ recruiting test annually.
  • Identify and evaluate high school and talent through evaluation of videos sent by prospects.
  • Weekly phone conversations with prospects.
  • Junior recruiting—Identify prospects and follow-up as requested by the head coach.
  • Request transcript from recruits and follow up with appropriate calls to registrar and high school counselors.
  • Work directly with the USD admission’s liaison in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Unofficial visits- coordinate unofficial visits in keeping with appropriate NCAA regulations.
  • Official visits – Coordinate official visits, including travel, the coordination of the involvement of current rowers, arrangements for meals and entertainment and transportation to the boat house.
  • Arrange for academic meetings with faculty members and for an academic class with one of the players.  Provide tours of campus.

Team Travel Coordination 

  • Plan out detailed budget for all road trips
  • Coordinate and explain the expenses to sport supervisor
  • Coordinate air and ground transportation with authorized travel agency
  • Distribute cash advances to players and coaches, and secure appropriate documentation/signatures.
  • File expense report for team in a timely manner upon return from each away trip.
  • Secure bus use with transportation coordinator, when needed.
  • Prepare fleet and equipment for travel as well as coordinate transportation of crew trailer and shells to competition site.

General Assignments 

  • Involvement with all administrative and organizational aspects of NCAA Division I program under the supervision of the head coach.
  • Supervision of rowers in a coordinated and planned program of practices and competition, with a concern for the players’ health and welfare, physical and psychological preparation.
  • Serve as the liaison to the Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Support and Student Services and follow up with recommendations or requests. 
  • Knowledge of and adherence to all University, NCAA, and conference rules and regulations, policies and procedures, with special attentions to recruiting, eligibility, admissions, and financial aid.
  • Enforce University and athletic department policies and regulations with regard to use/abuse of alcohol and drugs by team members.
  • Provide input for the competitive schedule to the head coach
  • Maintain professional growth by attendance at appropriate meetings, clinics, workshops.
  • Coordinate alumni event at the annual San Diego Crew Classic. Arrange for Crew Classic entries, including alumni boats.
  • Manage the boathouse, keep it in strong working order, maintain the fleet and equipment, including launches and trucks, utilizing outside resources when needed.
  • Assist with the rigging of all boats and assume responsibility for the working condition (including gassing) of the launches.
  • Maintain necessary statistical records in cooperation with the Director or Assistant Director for Media Relations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Heartsaver CPR /AED certification required. Must have this certificate within 6 weeks of employment.
  • Must pass NCAA Division I Coaches Recruiting Test, (yearly). Must complete this within 6 weeks of employment.
  • California driver’s license required within 6 weeks of employment.
  • Appropriate US Coast Guard safety certification within 6 weeks of employment.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to travel for extended periods of time for athletic contests and recruiting activities.

Background check:  Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes. 

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Competitive rowing experience required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to drive crew trailer preferred.
  • Ability to rig and repair rowing equipment preferred.
Posting Salary:

$5858.67 -5900 per month; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
