Department Description:

Through our various departments, we oversee media relations, presidential and executive-level communications, the university’s website, and the production of select publications. We collaborate with the Office of Development, the Office of Alumni Relations, and the Office of Parent Relations on communication issues and projects. We also advise on communications policy, institutional marketing and messaging with the Office of the President and members of the Executive Council.

Detailed Description:

The digital projects specialist (DPS) is responsible for designing and developing wide-ranging web-based projects and electronic communications on behalf of University Marketing and Communications (UM&C). These projects include, but are not limited to, university websites, digital marketing tools,  email communications, advertising and content development, program brochures, graphics, and other digital collateral. The DPS is also responsible for conceptual design and production utilizing strong technical knowledge of front-end web development and design. This position provides digital and design expertise, web support, and creative guidance to a variety of departments across campus. The DPS ensures visual presentation and content are current, high-quality, and reflect and enhance overall messaging and strategies as determined by the senior director of Content Development and Strategy and associate vice president for UM&C. The DPS stays current with emerging trends in the digital communications industry and actively seeks new and innovative ways to help the university reach its strategic marketing and communications goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Web Development                                                                                                             

  • Produce a variety of electronic communications, including websites, email communications, digital marketing assets, and digital screens across campus using various platforms and design software.
  • Design and transmit digital communications in collaboration with the director of Web Development and Design (WDD) including Torero Weekly and e-newsletters.
  • Serve as a key department liaison providing design expertise and input on USD webpages in conjunction with colleagues in ITS and web developers across campus.
  • In partnership with WDD director, collaborate with campus partners on various internal projects, coordinate with ITS and Web Services on USD’s digital tools and enterprise platforms.
  • Implement USD’s web content management systems and email marketing systems.
  • Participate in professional development, training, and continuing education relevant to the position.
  • Other duties as assigned to advance projects, initiatives, and priorities of the university.

Digital and Print Design and Production

  • Working with UM&C team and affiliated colleagues across campus, execute concepts and provide a wide range of solutions appropriate to the nature of each assignment; understand, organize, and appropriately utilize print and digital assets as available.
  • Develop and package content for distribution via official campus digital platforms, including photos, video, digital ads, and other assets; capture photo assets as needed.
  • Design and develop webpages, HTML emails, and/or other electronic media (i.e. social media, web banner ads, digital presentations, on-campus electronic boards).
  • Provide management for web and online/electronic projects by working with colleagues to design, implement, and evaluate electronic communications.
  • Collaborate with the directors of Creative Services and Brand Marketing on design projects and production of online and print material, ensuring production is on track and of high quality, meets stated deadlines, and reflects the mission, strategic direction, and brand of the university.
  • Concept, design, and produce final art for a wide range of digital materials including, but not limited to, comprehensive program brochures, advertising, banners, posters, and other print and electronic materials.
  • As assigned, meet with clients to ascertain and plan their electronic design needs; make design recommendations based on overall marketing objectives; assist in implementing projects quickly and cost-effectively, outsourcing when appropriate.
  • Work with external vendors/contractors on digital marketing projects as needed.
  • Develop analytics metrics to assess communications engagement.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes. 

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in marketing, digital media, web development, visual communication, and/or related professions; experience with in-house marketing and communications environment or agency.
  • At least 5 years’ experience with HTML coding and content management systems like Cascade, SalesForce and Target X.
  • Expert knowledge of digital design principles, UI/UX best practices, and responsive web design.
  • Extensive experience with Google applications, CMS platforms such as Cascade and WordPress, and CRM/ESP platforms such as Salesforce.
  • Experience with email marketing platforms, digital advertising assets, and SEO optimization.
  • Expert knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat; experience with all Adobe Creative Suite applications.
  • Demonstrated ability in all phases of the creative process from concept, design, and layout to final printing or web development completion.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks, from inception through production, within tight deadlines in a busy office environment.
  • Working knowledge of PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
  • Strong conceptual thinking skills; excellent oral, written, presentation, and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with clients on projects from conception to completion.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of USD.
  • Must be friendly and personable; mature, positive attitude.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Technical skills include shooting and editing digital photography.
  • Experience in graphic design important.
  • Experience in video editing helpful.

  • Possess a thorough understanding of web, electronic media, and marketing principles; keen sense of future trends in the field; strong aesthetic and editorial sensibilities; and ability to work effectively with writers and other content creators.
  • Must possess a clear understanding of the university’s branding, writing, and graphic standards and ensure standards are adhered to at all times.
  • Ability to multitask in a service-oriented manner and be able to excel with a great deal of autonomy in a demanding, fast-paced office setting.
  • Ability to implement tools to analyze web traffic and create marketing reports from such data.
  • Ability to discuss technical details and work with web programmers/engineers regarding issues such as database connectivity and coding techniques. Ability to discuss technical issues with non-technical clients.
  • Knowledge of USD’s policies and procedures.

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
