Detailed Description:

The University of San Diego School of Law invites applications from entry-level and lateral candidates for a full-time (11 months/year) non-tenure track position.  We seek applications from candidates with scholarly or practice distinction or promise and a commitment to excellence in teaching.

The Tax Law Program is a multi-faceted comprehensive program serving both Juris Doctorate (J.D). and Master in Taxation degree (Tax LL.M.) students.  Since its establishment in 1978, over one thousand LL.M. degrees have been awarded to tax attorneys across the globe.  The program offers a wide array of doctrinal tax classes, open to both J.D. and LL.M. students.  The clinical tax offerings are among the largest in the country and are also open to both sets of students.  The Program prepares both JD and LL.M students to enter practice, as well as providing JD students with the foundation to pursue an LL.M. An online Tax LLM program will be launched in the fall semester of 2025.

Applicants should have substantial legal practice experience, primarily in tax law, and strong experience or interest in mentoring JD and Tax LLM students.   This position will require the successful candidate to teach and operate the Tax Law Program. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop the tax curriculum for review and input from the Vice Dean, including introducing new courses and eliminating outdated courses
  • Advise the Vice Dean on issues relating to the tax curriculum
  • Manage the in-person and online Tax LLM program
  • Recruit and mentor new adjunct tax faculty members
  • Supervise the development and implementation of asynchronous tax courses
  • Teach at least one tax course per semester
  • Advises JD students interested in a tax career
  • Assist Tax LLM students identify job opportunities
  • Engage with Tax LLM alumni to strengthen alumni networks
  • Negotiate favorable enrollment fees for USD students to attend local tax conferences
  • Facilitate networking opportunities for tax students, including planning events (panels, guest speakers).

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes. 

Faculty Full-Time Position: This is a full-time, non-tenure track renewable faculty position for 11 months/year.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a JD degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred candidates would have at least three years of legal practice experience. Membership in the California bar or a willingness to sit for the California bar within one year of appointment preferred. 

Posting Salary:

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
