Detailed Description:

Responsible for supervising the day-to-day operations of the custodial team, ensuring that all areas of the Wellness Center are clean, well-maintained, and in compliance with health and safety standards. The role will include managing staff schedules, overseeing cleaning operations, providing training, and working closely with the Wellness Center team to meet the needs of students, staff, and visitors. Provides routine and non-routine support associated with the daily cleaning of the Wellness Center.

Periodically, this position may be asked to lead or contribute to either ad hoc or ongoing division/campus projects outside the scope of their day-to-day activities. In addition. This position contributes to or leads additional division/campus projects outside of typical duties to help further accomplish student or organizational goals. Additional assignments may be seasonal, ad hoc or ongoing, depending on the project.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Custodial Operations:

  • Oversee and participate in routine custodial duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, trash removal, and restroom maintenance to maintain the cleanliness of the Wellness Center inside and adjacent outside spaces.
  • Ensure floor care is regularly conducted, including sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing, buffing, and vacuuming.
  • Oversee the sanitization of high-touch areas such as door handles, railings, and fitness equipment, following all health and safety guidelines.
  • Ensure restrooms are cleaned, sanitized, and restocked with necessary supplies.
  • Monitor and inspect equipment and tools used by custodial staff, ensuring they are in proper working condition.

Supervision of Custodial Staff:

  • Supervise a team of custodial employees, including assigning daily tasks, managing work schedules, and overseeing performance.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the facility to ensure that all areas meet cleanliness, safety, and operational standards.
  • Provide on-the-job training for custodial staff, ensuring they are knowledgeable about cleaning procedures, the use of equipment, and health and safety protocols.
  • Manage time-off requests and any staffing needs for special events or peak periods.
  • Provide performance feedback, conduct annual performance evaluations, and implement improvement plans when necessary.

Event Setup and Breakdown:

  • Supervise and assist the custodial team with the setup and breakdown of events at the Wellness Center, ensuring all equipment and furniture are handled properly and promptly.
  • Ensure that all event spaces are cleaned before and after events.

Inventory Management:

  • Monitor and manage the inventory of cleaning supplies, ensuring that all materials are properly stocked and ordered in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all cleaning equipment is maintained and available for use by custodial staff.
  • Track usage of supplies and materials to ensure cost containment.
  • Safety and Compliance:
  • Ensure all cleaning procedures adhere to university safety standards, including proper use of chemicals and equipment according to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Monitor the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by custodial staff to ensure their safety.
  • Identify and report potential safety hazards within the Wellness Center to supervisor, taking steps to address and resolve them as quickly as possible.
  • Customer Service:
  • Serve as a point of contact for staff, students, and visitors, responding to inquiries or directing them to the appropriate department.
  • Provide support and direction for the custodial staff to ensure they are equipped to deliver excellent customer service

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Employee is required to wear the uniform provided by USD.
  • Building is open 7 days a week, 12 months of the year from 7am -10pm most days.  Work schedule will rotate with other Custodians and employee will be asked to work a rotating schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays based on department needs.
  • Background check:  Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
  • Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes. 
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience in a custodial, cleaning, or facilities role, preferably within a wellness, fitness facility or higher education facility.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in current cleaning methods and techniques required
  • Working knowledge of chemical handling procedures, OSHA regulations, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One or more years of experience in supervising and managing a team preferred.
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Experience in communicating and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with eco-friendly cleaning products and practices.

Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on cleanliness, safety, and maintaining a welcoming environment.
  • Ability to work alone or without close supervision.
  • Understanding of the importance of customer service with the ability to follow-up as well as communicate with supervisor, campus community members and campus visitors.
  • Ability to complete forms and create reports on inventories of supplies.
  • Ability to operate all mechanical cleaning equipment.
  • Working knowledge of health and safety guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting surfaces.
  • Responsive and flexible to changing work schedule in order to support event operations including set-up and break down tasks.
Posting Salary:

$23.85 - $23.86 per hour; Excellent Benefits

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
