Established in 2018, the LGBTQ+ & Allies Commons came out of a legacy of student activism that pushed for greater visibility and support for LGBTQ+ community members. As a student-run space, our work is informed and carried out by student coordinators and volunteers. We seek to create affirming spaces for queer and trans folks while educating the entire campus community about inclusive strategies through an anti-oppression framework that is explicitly pro-Black, queer and feminist. With this goal in mind, we provide an LGBTQ+ student lounge, host identity-specific community groups, and offer educational programs around LGBTQIA+ culture and concerns. As an engaged, contemporary Catholic university, USD is dedicated to creating a world where each person's inherent dignity is protected and affirmed. Our presence on campus flows out of this commitment and is an expression of the university's solidarity and embodiment of the Catholic call to care for the whole person.

Detailed Description:

The Division of Student Affairs is committed to grounding our policies, programs, and procedures in antiracist practice. With this commitment, we recognize the importance of educating ourselves and holding one another accountable to ensure our work is approached through an equity, inclusion, and social justice lens. We recognize our need for ongoing development in this area, and continue to strive to improve. We expect all members of the Division of Student Affairs are willing to engage in this work alongside us to uphold our Catholic mission in creating a welcoming environment where the dignity of all students, staff, administrators, and faculty at USD is embraced. 

Under the guidance of the Director, Gender Identity Resources and collaborative direction of the Co-Directors, the Associate Director assists in the development, implementation and projects of The Commons. The Associate Director engages the University of San Diego Community in exploring and affirming the unique intersections of each person’s identities. The Associate Director is responsible for the on-going development, administration, and coordination of diversity, inclusion, and social justice efforts to improve campus climate and student equity, with a focus on supporting the LGBTQ Community. The Associate Director serves as a liaison and knowledge expert to the campus community regarding issues of diversity, inclusion and multicultural education; serves as an advocate for underrepresented and underserved groups with an emphasis on the LGBTQ Community; and works to create an inclusive campus environment. Periodically, this position may be asked to lead or contribute to either ad hoc or ongoing division/campus projects outside the scope of their day-to-day activities.


Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Provide leadership, day-to-day direction, and long-range planning in the administrative oversight of the LGBTQ+ & Allies Commons.
  • Ensure the LGBTQ+ & Allies Commons functions as a welcoming and safe space to retain and support LGBTQ+ students.
  • Manage programming budget for LGBTQ+ & Allies Commons
  • Assists the Co-Directors with the day-to-day operations of the Commons.
  • Develops and sustains collaborative partnerships with campus units to achieve the Commons’ purposes and goals and promotes the Commons’ services, programs, and resources.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Commons and various on-campus departments.
  • Participates on relevant on-campus meetings and committees to enhance diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice efforts.
  • Conducts constituency needs assessments, formulates recommendations, and implements new programs and services in alignment with university co-curricular learning outcomes to increase sense of belonging for LGBTQ+ students.
  • Supports recruitment and retention efforts of LGBTQ students, Black students and other marginalized groups identified as “at risk.”
  • Assists in the strategic planning processes of the Commons and subsequent implementation and evaluation.
  • Attends joint meetings and retreats.
  • Contribute to or lead additional division/campus projects outside of typical duties to help further accomplish student or organizational goals.
  • Additional assignments may be seasonal, ad hoc or ongoing, depending on the project.

Identity Development

  • Develops, implements, coordinates and evaluates programs and initiatives that educate the campus community around issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion with an emphasis on gender and sexual identities, ensuring alignment with the Division’s co-curricular learning outcomes.
  • Oversees the Rainbow Educator and Safe Space Allies Programs including facilitator recruitment, training, and professional development. Develops intentional program content supporting both identity specific and intersectional options. Evaluates programs for effectiveness and alignment with learning outcomes.
  • Creates opportunities for students to connect, become involved on and off campus, and develop tangible skills for students to thrive at USD.
  • Supports diversity, inclusion, and social justice programming for fall and spring orientations.

Advisement and Supervision

  • May supervise up to one graduate assistant and 3-5 student workers.
  • Advises students on academic, financial and personal needs.
  • Works collaboratively with the campus constituents focused on student success and retention to collaboratively advise students.
  • Provides shared oversight with the Commons Assistant Director for integrated and intentional leadership and identity development across The Commons including training and development of graduate assistants and student staff/interns/coordinators.
  • Oversees the Rainbow Educator Advisory Team and Undergraduate Rainbow Educator Leadership Team and continually develops and shapes the vision for the future.
  • Attends events hosted by The Commons, including nights and weekends.
  • Provides support and leadership development to student organizations affiliated with The Commons. 
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Master's degree required, preferably in student affairs administration or related area (e.g., Counseling, Student Development, Gender Equity, Higher Education).
  • Three years of professional experience beyond the graduate experience in student affairs, minority affairs or a related area required
  • At least two years of supervisory experience required
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working effectively with diverse populations, with a particular emphasis on the LGBTQ population through an anti-racist lens required.

Performance Expectations - Knowledge Skills and Abilities: 

  • Experience, education and passion in the areas of diversity and inclusion, social justice Black student development, women’s and gender equity, masculinities, etc.
  • Demonstrate ability to initiate, coordinate, oversee and complete various projects with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to support the Catholic mission and vision of the University.
  • Demonstrated practice of centering diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in one’s work including an ongoing commitment to personal learning and development in this area
  • Demonstrated commitment to student learning and development in the co-curriculum and experience assessing the impact of programs and related services. Language would be used if appropriate to the position.
  • Strong skills related to group facilitation and training, individual and group advising and student leadership development.
  • Ability to be successful working in flexible, multifaceted environments, with various leadership styles.
  • Must possess excellent human relations skills: ability to work with various campus constituents including students, faculty, administrators, staff and alumni; conflict resolution, decision-making and implementation of skills; experience in a leadership/supervisory role.
  • Must exhibit strong attention to detail and organizational skills, ability to remain calm under pressure and be able to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of Catholic social and moral principles as they inform and support the role of Students Affairs personnel serving at a Catholic University.
  • Proven ability to develop, implement and evaluate creative educational programs and services for students, faculty and staff in under-represented, underserved and marginalized groups.
  • Experience with assessment and evaluation.
  • Familiarity with basic accounting and budgetary procedures.
  • Ability to create and design marketing materials for programming using various software applications.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings as needed
