Detailed Description:

The Assistant Coach for Women’s Swimming and Diving assists in the development and implementation of both the educational and the athletic components of the NCAA Division I swimming and diving program. Also assists in creating and implementing the general business operations of the program.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Recruiting
    • Assists head coach in all aspects of recruiting.
    • Responsible for recruiting academically and athletically qualified student-athletes for admission to the University with adherence to admissions and athletic department policies and procedures.
    • Understand and keep up to date regarding NCAA/conference/league rules as they pertain to recruiting and eligibility.
    • Pass the NCAA coaches’ recruiting test annually. 
    • Identify and evaluate high school and junior college talent through evaluation at local, regional, sectional, and national meets, and film.
    • Maintain telephone contact with prospects. 
    • Recruit their centers of influence. 
    • Junior recruiting
      • Identify prospects and follow-up with by mail/email.
    • Transcript request
      • The most influential piece of information in the recruiting process.
      • Letter to registrar and follow-up calls to counselors, when appropriate.
      • Working with our admissions people in an effective and efficient manner.
    • Home Visits
      • Assist head coach with preparation and presentation when appropriate.
    • Unofficial visits
      • Persuade local prospects (San Diego and Los Angeles) to visit us so we can get to know them.
      • Persuade local athletes to attend some of our home meets.
    • Campus visits
      • Arrange travel for our recruits.
      • Coordinate the involvement of our athletes.
      • Spend meals with recruits.
      • Arrange an academic meeting with a department person in their field of interest and an academic class with one of the players.
      • Facilitate campus tours.
    • Follow-up
      • Respond to leads and inquiries in a timely fashion. 
  • Assist Head Coach with Teaching and Coaching
    • Supervision of athletes in a coordinated and planned program of practices and competition, with a concern for the athletes’ health and welfare, physical and psychological preparation.
    • Practice Preparation
      • Help organize and plan practice everyday.
      • Present ideas to help us improve and win. 
    • Coaching
      • Know our philosophy and why.
      • Know every drill and your role in that drill.
      • Teach our athletes with enthusiasm.
      • Help develop the skills of our athletes.
      • Be available to work with athletes before and after practice. 
  • General Assignments 
    • The coordination of all University academic policies and responsibilities for counseling student-athletes relative to academic success, progress and eligibility. 
    • Knowledge of and adherence to all University, NCAA, and conference rules and regulations, policies and procedures, with special attentions to recruiting, eligibility, admissions, and financial aid.
    • Enforce University and athletic department policies and regulations in regard to use/abuse of alcohol and drugs by team members.
    • Foster and maintain positive student body and faculty relationships.
    • Maintain professional growth through meetings, clinics, workshops, etc.
    • Assist in conference, regional and national events hosted by the University.
    • Assist in the organization of any team and/or department awards presentations for student-athletes.
  • Travel 
    • Develop detailed budgets for all road trips.
    • Coordinate and explain the expenses to head coach.
    • Coordinate air and ground transportation with authorized travel agency.
    • Distribute cash advances to players and coaches.
    • File expense report for team.
    • Secure bus and van use with transportation coordinator. 
Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • At least one year of related experience in the sport
  • Understanding of and compliance with NCAA rules and regulations

Performance Expectations - Knowledge Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ability to communicate effectively with athletes, members of the University community, San Diego community, and all media.
  • Possess good management skills.
  • Ability to understand the goals and responsibilities of running a successful athletic program at the NCAA Division I level.
  • Represent the University in a professional and responsible manner; excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Adherence to and appreciation for NCAA/conference/league regulations and ability to instill those values in subordinates and students.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: 

1. Heartsaver CPR /AED certification required. Must have this certificate within 6 weeks of employment.
2. Must pass NCAA Division I Coaches Recruiting Test, (yearly). Must complete this within 6 weeks of employment.
3.California driver’s license required within 6 weeks of employment.

Special Conditions of Employment:

•Ability to travel for extended periods of time for athletic contests and recruiting activities.
•Successful completion of required background checks.

Tools & Equipment Used:

Personal computer, Microsoft Office, Scoutware, general office equipment.

Background check:  Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.
