Department Description:

Legal Clinic/School of Law. The Legal Clinics are a working law office that have provided training for law students while meeting the community’s needs for free legal services for almost fifty years. In a typical year, the Legal Clinics close 400-500 cases. The Women’s Legal Clinic is the newest addition to this award-winning law school program. Other clinics are Appellate, Civil, Education and Disability, Entrepreneurship, Immigration, Federal Tax, State Income Tax, State Sales and Use Tax, Veterans, and Worker’s Rights.

Detailed Description:

This is an academic instructional position for the Women’s Legal Clinic in the University of San Diego Legal Clinics program. The Legal Clinics program provides upper division law students with the opportunity to use learned skills under the supervision of a practicing attorney while representing real clients. The Professor of Practice for the Women’s Legal Clinic will determine the course syllabus, assign course materials, provide instruction weekly during the academic year to law students in a seminar style class on relevant substantive law, procedure and policy, and includes case rounds. The Professor of Practice will also review student work, provide supervision over students in court, and determine grades. As needed to meet client needs, the Professor of Practice may appear in court independently and interact with community-based organizations.

Job Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

J.D. degree

Active membership in the California State Bar (in good standing)

Three years of family law experience

Familiarity with computerized case management systems for legal practice

Demonstrated skills in customer service, including problem-solving

Ability to communicate effectively both in person and in writing

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Teaching experience in a U.S. law school

Experience supervising law student interns

Experience dealing with community-based organizations and volunteer groups

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Current membership in good standing in the California State Bar

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed

Must be able to travel as needed

 

Background check:  Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

Posting Salary:

This is a three to five year presumptively renewable contract for the academic year (nine months).
