Detailed Description:

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefit-based position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2027. The appointment is renewable at the discretion of the University and dependent upon performance and continued funding.

The Director of the Pep Band is a part-time position that is vital to creating the spirited, energetic atmosphere that defines USD’s athletic events — especially at home men’s and women’s basketball games, football games, campus pep rallies, and other major university functions. The Director will play a key role in fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for student musicians, ensuring that all members feel valued and supported in their musical and personal growth.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Performances & Appearances:

  • Attend, direct, and facilitate Pep Band performances and appearances.
  • Collaborate with Athletics and Spirit Squad staff on performance logistics.
  • Coordinate transportation, setup, and other logistical needs for performances.
  • Promote the Pep Band through campus engagement and marketing initiatives.
  • Foster a sense of community and school spirit among student musicians.

Practice & Rehearsals:

  • Schedule and conduct rehearsals to prepare the Pep Band for performances.

Administrative Responsibilities & Scheduling:

  • Oversee Pep Band member participation, scheduling, and engagement.
  • Communicate and coordinate with the music department as appropriate.
  • Plan and execute fundraising efforts to support band operations and initiatives.

Maintenance & Inventory:

  • Manage and maintain instruments, equipment, and uniforms.

Key Event Commitments:

  • West Coast tournament in Las Vegas.
  • All home football and Basketball Games.

Performance & Safety:

  • Support the safety and well-being of all Pep Band members during practices, travel, and performances.
  • Collaborate with USD staff to prepare emergency response plans aligned with university protocols.
  • Follow guidance provided by USD Sports Medicine and relevant university departments.

Professional Conduct:

  • Represent the University of San Diego in a professional and positive manner.
  • Reflect and promote the university’s values of integrity, respect, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Maintain alignment with the USD Code of Conduct and Spirit Program expectations.
  • Encourage an environment rooted in mutual respect, fairness, and community.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Hours may vary slightly depending on the season. Primary work occurs during the Football season (August–November) and Basketball season (October–March).

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes. 

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music, Education, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience leading a band or similar ensemble, preferably at the collegiate or high school level.

Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong musical leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and during game-day events.
  • Familiarity with drumline instruction and coordination, particularly in a marching or athletic band setting; ability to integrate percussion effectively into high-energy performances is strongly preferred.
Posting Salary:

$20.00 - $30.00 per hour

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position.  Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience, education and other factors including departmental budget.
