Initially founded in 1962 as an education department within the College for Women, the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) was officially established in 2005. As the second oldest academic institution at the University of San Diego (USD), the school has been shaped by a profound dedication to educational equity, which drives the mission and foundational values of SOLES and guides the school’s compassionate and strategic vision to help shape the future by educating and empowering professionals to enact academic justice, enhance human dignity and improve the quality of life of diverse individuals, families, and communities locally and globally. The school serves graduate students across three departments and offers three doctoral programs, nine master’s degrees, teacher credential programs, five undergraduate offerings, as well as seven certificates for graduate credit. In addition to WSCUC institutional accreditation, many of the school’s programs hold prestigious programmatic accreditations. The MA in Marital and Family Therapy has maintained accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) since 1992. The MA in Counseling, School Counseling, and Clinical Mental Health Counseling specializations have maintained accreditation with the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) since 2007 and 2013, respectively. The School Counseling program has also been approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) as a pathway for students to earn a California Pupil Personnel Services School Counseling credential. Likewise, the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction with Credentials is an approved educator preparation program by the CCTC. The MEd provides pathways for candidates to earn preliminary credentials in multiple subjects, single subjects, education specialist, and/or multiple subjects with bilingual authorization.

Detailed Description: |
The School of Leadership and Education Sciences at the University of San Diego seeks qualified applicants for a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of associate or full professor with directorship responsibilities over the summer. The successful candidate will serve as the Director of Doctoral Programs and provide strategic and innovative leadership with a joint appointment with the Department of Leadership Studies and the Department of Learning & Teaching and will report to the chairs of both departments and the Dean of SOLES. The role includes aligning PhD program policies and procedures, managing doctoral student support services, maintaining and responding to accreditation requirements and academic program review recommendations, and collaborating with department chairs, academic program managers, and faculty to address emerging needs and trends in our PhD programs. This Director of Doctoral Programs administrative position is a three-year renewable position that is reviewed annually.
Key Responsibilities:
● As the Director of both PhD programs, responsibilities will include leading outreach efforts, orienting prospective and incoming doctoral students, maintaining and updating program policies, providing budgetary oversight, managing academic advisement issues and appeals, overseeing self-study and assessment review processes, reviewing marketing and recruitment materials, and ensuring equity in admissions and milestone achievements. Additional duties involve matching PhD students with appropriate dissertation chairs, aligning policies and practices across programs, and collaborating with faculty to design, implement, and assess program improvements for continuous growth.
● The Director of PhD programs will liaise with doctoral programs in other universities, maintaining a profile in research-affiliated local, national, and international organizations and supporting the departments, student admissions, and general departmental and university service on department, school, and university-wide committees.
● This position will involve teaching and advising responsibilities at the doctoral level in our PhD programs and shepherding doctoral students through their milestone requirements. Preference will be given to candidates with leadership experience in managing doctoral programs who can effectively design and teach high-quality onsite and online courses and advise candidates on their dissertation research.
● Faculty members must have an active research agenda to be able to create research opportunities through grants to support students’ research and be willing to collaborate across disciplines within the School and University.
● Demonstrate experience directing doctoral programs and chairing doctoral dissertations.

Qualifications: An ideal candidate for this position will meet the following criteria:
● Earned doctorate in education, leadership, or a related field.
● Experience with doctoral program coordination. ● Demonstrated teaching excellence in a doctoral program.
● Experience providing teaching mentorship for doctoral students while also providing teaching mentorship/support for the faculty members teaching in the doctoral programs.
● Demonstrated commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and critical and global perspectives.
● Demonstrated and active evidence of research and scholarship in academic venues, as reflected in research grants, publications, and professional presentations.
● Demonstrated experience teaching in doctoral programs and advising doctoral students on their dissertations
● Demonstrated technological expertise and a pedagogical understanding of both online and in-person instruction.
● Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following: qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, higher education leadership, nonprofit and philanthropic leadership, organizational leadership and consulting, and school reform.
● Excellent interpersonal communication and collaborative skills.
● Ability to effectively mentor and manage faculty dynamics.
● Experience with in-person and online instruction is preferred.

● A record of supporting achievement for students from marginalized identities.
● A record of exemplary research on underrepresented groups.
