Detailed Description:
Provides culturally-competent supplemental academic advising and related proactive outreach and support directly for undergraduate students who are Undeclared or declared majors in the College of Arts and Sciences. Serves as academic advising resource for Faculty Advisors and academic departments in interpreting academic policies and regulations; degree requirements, navigating registration procedures and provides relevant training. Develops and maintains academic advising resources that are student and advisor facing. Fosters and develops collaborative partnerships across the University to support students’ academic success.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide Culturally-Competent Academic Advising, Proactive Outreach and Student Support 

  • Provide culturally-competent supplemental academic advising for undergraduate students who are Undeclared or declared majors in the College of Arts and Sciences, in individual and group advising sessions, as well as via email as referred by Faculty Advisors
  • Assist students in interpreting academic policies and regulations; degree requirements and navigating registration procedures (e.g. transferring courses)
  • Provide resources and referrals to connect students to relevant University departments, programs and services as needed
  • Serve as primary liaison to students for academic advising questions received via casadvising@sandiego.edu and to One Stop Student Center Staff
  • Proactively, as much as possible, outreach directly to students to address outstanding degree requirements, support degree completion, encourage timely declaration of major, and address failed course prerequisites
  • Provide academic support via one-on-one meetings to students returning from scholastic disqualification
  • Maintain existing academic advising resources and collaboratively develop and implement new resources, initiatives, and programs to address identified student needs related to academic advising
  • Serve as primary liaison to Information Technology Support to ensure CAS online resources related to academic advising are up-to-date and accurate (ie MySanDiego Portal “My Academics” page)
  • Collaboratively design and implement student-facing workshops, presentations and trainings as well as contribute to communications (e.g  casadvising@ email broadcasts) related to academic advising topics
  • Engage in professional development opportunities to continue to develop advising skills, cultural competence, awareness of student needs and knowledge of University policies and resources
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned

Serve as Advising Resource for Faculty Advisors and Academic Departments in the College of Arts and Sciences

  • Assist Faculty Advisors (including Department Chairs, Living Learning Community (LLC) Faculty Advisors in collaboration with Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Transfer Advisors and Major Advisors) in interpreting academic policies and regulations; degree requirements and navigating registration procedures (e.g. transferring courses)Develop and implement training opportunities for Faculty Advisors on academic advising topics (e.g. core curriculum, navigating academic advising resources, degree requirements) in variety of delivery modes (e.g. pre-recorded modules)
  • Develop and facilitate customized training sessions as requested by Departments in the College of Arts and Sciences (ie Degree Works)
  • Maintain existing Faculty Advisor-facing academic advising resources and collaboratively develop/implement new resources, initiatives, and programs to address identified Faculty Advisor needs
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned

Foster and Grow Collaborative Partnerships to Support Students’ Academic Success

  • Partner with Pre-Health Advisor, Pre-Law Advisor, and Liberal Studies Director to facilitate connecting students to advising and resources as needed
  • Partner with academic advisors in the Knauss School of Business and Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering to ensure accurate knowledge and awareness of majors and minors available in these schools; establish and utilize best practices to advise Undeclared students with interest in these programs
  • Partner with Center for Student Success to facilitate Student Success Workshops for students placed on academic probation and serve on Persistence Response Team for non-registering students
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with key partners to support students connected to specific programs related to identities they hold including, but not limited to, Student Support Services, Athletic Academic Support, International Center, Disability and Learning Difference Resource Center
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Two years of counseling and/or advising experience working directly with diverse demographics in an academic setting
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to respectfully interact with and be sensitive to individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • Strong communication skills including ability to present to diverse audiences; clearly express ideas and explanations in writing; and effectively listen to others
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing professional and collaborative relationships with stakeholders
  • Excellent problem-solving ability and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making ability, implementation and follow-through skills
  • Excellent organization skills, ability to prioritize workload, motivating skills, and conflict management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work both independently and collaboratively on a team
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and privacy per FERPA as appropriate in interactions with students, their supporters, faculty and staff.
  • Computer skills – word processing, presentation software and spreadsheet program skills and Internet usage
  • Ability to access and use resources such as websites, databases and media materials preferred to access student records needed for advising desired
  • Must be available for occasional evenings and weekends to support College of Arts and Sciences events/activities and student needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Familiarity in working at a higher education institution and student support structures
  • Experience supervising and/or providing work direction to graduate students and/or student workers, including conducting evaluations
  • Familiarity with and understanding of a liberal arts education
  • Experience using software including student information systems (eg Banner 9), CRM (eg Salesforce), and degree audit tools (eg Degree Works)
