Detailed Description:

 This key leadership position oversees the majority of the outreach and external relations processes of the admissions office. Key responsibilities will include the supervision of the counseling staff, managing all aspects of the visitor experience including admission related events, contributing to the planning and execution of the yearly recruitment plan, and collaborating with the Director of Admission. Additional responsibilities will include: staff hiring, training, file review and decision-making, and oversight of on-campus events and activities. General responsibilities will include: Overseeing the process of evaluating and making decisions on admission applications, assisting with the development of admissions policies and procedures, managing and traveling in recruitment territories, counseling prospective students and families, planning and implementing special recruitment strategies, representing the University to high school counselors, alumni, and other external constituents, meeting with and offering presentations to campus visitors; conducting appropriate follow-up via phone, e-mail, and written correspondence to prospects, applicants, and school counselors; and assisting with the processing of applications for admission for first-year and transfer applications; and executing other admissions responsibilities as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervising all seven admission counselors, a team of (part-time) outside evaluators and one admission events coordinator
    • Responsible for the hiring of new counselors, part-time evaluators, daily supervision of tasks, providing leadership and motivation; performing job evaluations and training, and serving as an advocate for the staff's professional development.
    • Provide oversight for all collateral duties and job responsibilities managed by the counseling team and the admission events coordinator. 
  • Territory Management
    • Evaluate, interview, make admission and merit scholarship decisions on applications.
    • Participate in all aspects of the application review process which includes: calculating cumulative grade point average (GPA), analyzing the level of difficulty of courses taken by applicants, and assessing the applicants’ essay, letters of recommendation and extra-curricular activities.
    • Manage a select group of high schools and communicate with families and school counselors from those schools throughout the process. 
  • Manage/Provide Leadership regarding the Visitor Experience and Admission Events
    • Oversee all coordination of major admission events through the assistance of the admissions events coordinator and members of the counseling team including but not limited to the Counselor Fly-In Program, Fall Torero Showcase, Day and Overnight Programs, Torero Visit Day, and Come and See.
    • Design and implement all aspects of the visitor experience through the assistance of the staff members who manage the Torero Ambassadors Program including tour guides and providing general directions for those staff overseeing Out of State Ambassadors, Ole Ambassadors and SOAR (Student Outreach and Recruitment).


Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years in college admissions work experience required
  • 2-3 years of supervisory/leadership experience required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Events planning experience preferred
  • Knowledge of the University of San Diego and its programs

  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision
  • Must possess excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Must feel comfortable in a team-oriented, collaborative work environment
  • Knowledge of and willingness to learn and work with technology; specifically word processing environments, internet navigation, databases, and e-mail correspondence
  • A commitment to the University’s mission

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: 

  • A valid driver’s license

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to travel (including air travel) for up to two (2) consecutive weeks: nights and weekends are required
