The Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will serve as the primary advocate, mentor, and resource authority on diversity, cultural awareness, and inclusion of all students, faculty, and staff.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- As part of the Vice President and Provost of Academic Affairs team, the Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (Vice Provost) will serve as the primary advocate, mentor, and resource authority on diversity, cultural awareness, and inclusion of all students, faculty, and staff.
- The Vice Provost will work with campus constituents to support the University’s strategic plans through engagement of students, faculty, and staff in reaching its goals.
- Partnering with senior leadership, the Vice Provost advises and counsels on student support services, including campus-wide student initiatives to build a diverse and inclusive campus community, particularly for students of color.
- The Vice Provost must be able to guide and facilitate difficult discussions, create partnerships across multiple networks, and be a supporter for change.
Communicate and Connect:
- Advise the provost about matters related to diversity, equity, social justice, and inclusion.
- Engage proactively and establish strong collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders, faculty, students, staff, alums, and other external constituents.
- Provide leadership to ensure USD provides an inclusive experience for all of the students and employees it serves.
- Work closely with campus constituents to facilitate, benchmark, and implement an inclusion plan that support USD’s mission, core themes and strategic goals.
- Collaborate with Academic Affairs Communications to regularly communicate diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to both internal and external stakeholders and, when necessary, work with the University Communications Office to assist with crisis communication related to diversity.
Build and Facilitate:
- Build the structures, processes, policies, and evaluation and assessment of efforts necessary to center inclusion within the institution and to ensure all community members have the needed foundational knowledge and support to create an antiracist, equitable, and inclusive community:
- Ensure that diversity and inclusion programs and services comply with relevant state and federal laws, regulations, and college policies.
- Develop diversity metrics and prepare reports for the Board of Trustees and leadership team.
Identify, develop, implement, coordinate, and monitor programs designed with campus constituents to build an inclusive and antiracist culture and increase diversity:
- Collaborate on institutional inclusion and diversity plans and initiatives, including working with Human Resources on performance management and succession planning to identify, develop, implement, and monitor policies and programs designed to recruit, attract, retain, and promote a diverse workforce.
- Collaborate with the deans of the College of Arts and Sciences, the five Schools, and the Law School to improve faculty composition, faculty teaching and research, senior administrator and staff composition, and student and staff inclusion programming. > Develop training and coaching programs designed to educate employees on how to recognize, accommodate and embrace differences.
- Collaborate with Admissions to examine diversity, equity and inclusion in the application and enrollment process and provide suggestions for future practices.
- Periodically conduct a rigorous assessment of the impact of campus diversity and inclusion efforts, including implementing campus climate surveys for faculty, staff, and students.
- Monitor, track, and utilize local and national trends and internal data including climate studies, demographic data, policy analyses, and benchmarks for best practices and initiatives.
Advocate and Lead:
- Collaborate with campus leaders and stakeholders to develop policies, evaluate, revise, and/or remove institutional policies, procedures, and norms that erect differential structural barriers to the access and success of students, faculty, and staff who belong to marginalized and underserved populations.
- Lead the Center for Inclusion and Diversity, including supervision of personnel and oversight of center’s budget, as well as coordinate the University’s Diversity Committee.
- Integrate and expand on the current diversity and inclusion strategy across the university.
- Advocate for curricular and co-curricular efforts related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and identify equity gaps to ensure student success, including initiatives on pedagogy and professional development for faculty and staff.
- Partner with Mission and Ministry and other campus stakeholders to support efforts to celebrate religious diversity and promote and advance interfaith efforts on campus.

• Terminal degree.
• At least 10 years of working in a higher education setting.
• At least 5 years of leadership experience within a higher education setting.

• Openness to coordinating and collaborating with students, faculty, staff, and administrative leaders and the ability to build consensus to address challenges and opportunities.
• Ability to build trust and credibility with marginalized communities among USD students, faculty, staff, as well as communities throughout San Diego.
• Possess a business acumen in a team-oriented environment with knowledge of diversity and cross-cultural historical contexts and a commitment to social justice and equity.
